An overview of recent events and personnel changes in our Benedictine family.

Fr. Karol Cetwinski OSB

4 April 2026

On 31 March 2026, Abbot Primate Jeremias Schröder appointed those responsible for the Course for New Abbots, which was proposed during the last Congress of Abbots and is set to take place for the first time in 2027. Abbot President Christopher Jamieson (English Benedictine Congregation) is responsible for the curriculum and content, while Abbot Emeritus Edmund Power (Douai) will oversee coordination at Sant’Anselmo.

On 24 March, Abbot President Maksymilian Nawarra (Congregation of the Annunciation) appointed Fr. Karol Cetwinski as Prior Administrator of Tyniec Abbey. This appointment—occurring shortly before Easter—also had a significant impact on Sant’Anselmo, where Fr. Karol was not only a student but also the Choirmaster and director of the new Gregorian Chant course.

On 20 March, Montecassino Abbey awarded the newly established Pacis Nuntius prize to the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, Cardinal Pizzaballa. When the award was initially decided upon, it was not yet foreseeable that the conflict surrounding the Holy Land would intensify so drastically. This lends the award ceremony the weight of a prophetic sign.

On 13 March, Fr. Godfrey Mullen of St Meinrad (Swiss-American Congregation) was appointed Bishop of Belleville, Illinois. He had previously served there as Vicar General and subsequently as Diocesan Administrator.

On 27 February, the General Assembly of BECOSA (Benedictine Communities of Southern Africa) elected Prioress Sister Edith Reischert of Elukwatini as its new Chairperson. Fr. Barnabas Pham of Macheke in Zimbabwe (English Benedictine Congregation) was elected Vice-Chairperson. BECOSA comprises a dozen communities across South Africa, Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

On 23 February, the monks of Altenburg Abbey (Austrian Congregation) elected Fr. Albert Groiss as Prior Administrator for a three-year term.

The Abbot President of the Swiss-American Congregation has appointed Sister Eleanor Campion OCSO as Procurator General to the Holy See. A canon lawyer, she is the first woman to hold this position for a male religious order.
