Father Rupert Froschauer, OSB, passed away peacefully on 18 May 2026 in his 76th year, following a sudden accident that ended a life marked by dedication, intellect, and spiritual depth. Born in Wels in 1950 and professed as a Benedictine in Kremsmünster, he devoted himself wholeheartedly to theological study and priestly service. Ordained in 1974, he continued his academic formation in Vienna, ultimately earning a doctorate in philosophy and cultivating a lifelong passion for history, particularly the turbulent centuries of the Reformation.

As a teacher, archivist, and scholar, Father Rupert enriched many lives with his sharp mind and wide-ranging knowledge. His years at the Stiftsgymnasium and his work in the abbey archives revealed his commitment to education and research, while his numerous publications and lectures testified to his intellectual curiosity. In pastoral ministry, he served faithfully in various parishes, always offering thoughtful guidance and inspiring sermons marked by both spiritual insight and historical awareness.

Despite recurring physical suffering and long-standing struggles with depression, Father Rupert remained a man of resilience, openness, and contemplative spirit. He found joy in swimming, cycling, and—especially in his later years—immersing himself in the original languages of Scripture. His sudden death leaves a deep void in the community he served with such generosity. May he now find eternal peace in the presence of God, who called him home after a life lived with devotion and courage.
