Father Beda (Josef) Pavel was born in 1935, in Hodowitz (present-day Czech Republic), and was raised in a devout Catholic family by his parents Josef and Maria. From an early age, he showed signs of a deep religious calling, nurtured by his Christian upbringing. Determined to serve as a missionary, he joined Münsterschwarzach Abbey in 1954. Upon entering monastic life, he received the name Brother Beda and made his first profession in 1955. He studied philosophy at St. Ottilien (1955–1957) and theology in Würzburg, completing his Licentiate in Theology in 1962. He made his solemn profession in 1958 and was ordained a priest in 1960 by Abbot-Bishop Victor Hälg of Ndanda.

To prepare for missionary work, Fr. Beda spent a year in England (1962–1963) learning English and obtaining a teaching diploma. In 1964, he was sent to Tanzania, where he began his long and fruitful mission. He taught Mathematics, Physics, and Biology at several minor seminaries: Likonde, Kigonsera, Namupa, and Soni, dedicating over two decades to educating future priests. In 1985, he moved to Dar es Salaam, serving as the superior of the Kurasini Guest House for 13 years, where he became known for his hospitality and kindness. In 1998, he moved to Kilimahewa to serve as parish priest, later continuing as assistant parish priest until 2019.

Due to declining health, Fr. Beda returned to Ndanda in 2019 and spent his final years under the care of the Tutzing Sisters’ infirmary. He will be remembered as a dedicated missionary, a passionate teacher, and a warm-hearted pastor. His humility, friendliness, and unwavering service touched the lives of many. We give thanks to God for the gift of Fr. Beda’s life and ministry. Now that he has completed his earthly journey, we commend him to God’s loving and merciful hands. May he rest in eternal peace.
