On 28 February 2025, from Gemelli Hospital, Pope Francis conveyed a heartfelt message to participants of the course “Living the Liturgical Action in Fullness” at the Pontifical Athenaeum Sant’Anselmo. The Pope kindly wanted to send the text of the speech that he would have delivered in person in the special audience that had been granted to the participants of the course. Despite his physical suffering, the Holy Father emphasized the importance of deepening liturgical understanding, aligning with the call in his Apostolic Letter Desiderio desideravi.
He highlighted that those responsible for liturgical celebrations serve as guides for the community’s prayer life, transcending roles of mere functionaries. They are to be educators who humbly teach the art of liturgy, guiding the faithful through the sacramental experience. Their role involves wisely preparing each celebration, ensuring it serves the assembly’s spiritual well-being, and translating theological principles into practice.
Pope Francis urged these leaders to promote a liturgical style that mirrors the simplicity and humility of following Jesus, avoiding unnecessary grandeur. He encouraged them to perform their duties discreetly, without seeking recognition, embodying the Psalmist’s sentiment: “Not to us, Lord, not to us give the glory, but to your name alone.”
He reminded them that caring for the liturgy is fundamentally about nurturing prayer and facilitating encounters with the Lord. Drawing inspiration from Saint Teresa of Ávila, he described mystical experience as love transforming into wisdom—a blend of divine and human understanding. This dual wisdom is cultivated through prayer, study, and attentive listening.
The Anselmianum academic community expressed profound gratitude for the Pope’s encouraging message during this challenging time. They joined him in prayer and affection, committing to continue praying for his swift recovery.
