Brother Godfrid (Pius) Mbawala, OSB, passed away on January 14, 2025, at the age of 77. Born on June 23, 1948, in Ngomani Village, Songea Archdiocese, he was baptized and confirmed in his childhood at Chengena Parish. He completed his primary education in Ngomani and Mpitimbi schools by 1965. Later, he pursued secondary education at Hanga Minor Seminary (1994–1997) and Kaengesa Seminary (1998–2000), earning an accounting certificate in 2001 after attending Nyegezi College.

He joined the Benedictine monastic life in 1967, making his first vows in 1971, and final vows in 1977. He celebrated his Silver and Golden Jubilees in 1996 and 2021, respectively.

Godfrid served diligently in various assignments. He worked as a cashier and accountant for the printing and publishing factory TMP under the Bishops’ Conference of Tanzania. He also managed financial reports, storekeeping, and book distribution. After further studies, he resumed work at TMP before transferring to Hanga Monastery in 2004, where he served in accounting roles.

In 2011, he moved to Katibunga Monastery as a cashier, a role he fulfilled with dedication until his passing. Known for his prayerfulness, simplicity, and devotion, he was a role model to many monks, especially younger confreres who sought his guidance.

In November 2024, his health began to decline, leading to a stroke and complications. He passed away peacefully in Peramiho Hospital. Remembered for his faith, hard work, and obedience, he leaves a lasting legacy in Hanga and Katibunga. May he rest in eternal peace.
