The Benedictine Abbey of Michaelbeuern announces with sadness the passing of Fr. Paulus Haidenthaler, OSB, who died peacefully on August 30, 2024, at age 88. Born Andreas Haidenthaler in Durchham, Parish of Berndorf, he joined the abbey in 1955 and was ordained a priest on his 25th birthday in 1961. A dedicated teacher and mentor, he served as a German, History, and Geography instructor at the abbey school, where he later became principal. Under his leadership, the school expanded, admitted female students, and established a lasting partnership with St. Augustine’s School in Ghana.

Fr. Paulus also served as Prior, boarding school director, and long-time chaplain for the Michaelbeuern Volunteer Fire Department, who honored him as an honorary member in 1996. After his retirement, he was appointed abbey archivist and returned to serve as Prior from 2006-2015. Known for his dedication, he cherished relationships with former students and colleagues.

In recent years, Fr. Paulus faced health challenges, especially with eyesight and hearing, but remained grateful to stay among his fellow monks and caregivers. His wish to “go home to God” was peacefully fulfilled.

A Rosary will be prayed on September 4, 2024, at 7:00 p.m., and his Requiem Mass will be held on September 5, at 10:00 a.m. in the abbey church, followed by burial in the monastery cemetery.
