Father Gotthard Niedrist, Benedictine of Kremsmünster Abbey and Consistorial Councillor, was called to his eternal home on Friday, 20 March 2026, in his 75th year of life. Born Norbert Niedrist in 1951 in Eberstalzell, he grew up as the fifth of nine children and entered Kremsmünster Abbey after graduating from the abbey’s grammar school. Professing his vows in 1972 and 1975, he studied theology in Salzburg and was ordained a priest in 1977. His early ministry as chaplain was soon followed by academic studies in forestry, which prepared him for more than three decades of dedicated service as the monastery’s forest manager, where his diligence, integrity, and strong sense of responsibility left a lasting mark on the abbey’s stewardship.
Alongside his economic responsibilities for the forest and parish properties, Father Gotthard served wholeheartedly as a pastor. Whether in Adlwang, Scharnstein, the Almtal region, or later in Buchkirchen, he was deeply appreciated for his warmth, his presence among the people, and his gift for finding the right words at baptisms, weddings, and funerals. Even as his administrative duties grew—serving at times as Subprior and contributing to the abbey’s construction, agriculture, and maintenance departments—his pastoral devotion remained at the heart of his vocation. He was a man of community, conversation, and genuine connection, always ready to support both parishioners and fellow monks.
The diagnosis of cancer in 2022 was a heavy blow, yet Father Gotthard faced his illness with courage and unshaken faith. Time and again he rose from his sickbed to continue serving the parish he loved, until his strength could no longer keep pace with his will. In his final days, he entrusted himself peacefully to God. May He reward him for his lifelong service to the community and welcome him into the joy and communion of the saints.
