Brother Eugen (Albert) Kuhn OSB passed away unexpectedly on March 6, 2025, at the age of 85, after 62 years of monastic life. Born in 1939 in Ummendorf, Germany, he grew up in a large family and trained as a carpenter before switching to technical drafting. In 1960, he entered the monastery in Beuron, dedicating himself primarily to bookbinding. He took his temporary vows in 1963, and his solemn profession followed in 1966.
In 1967, he was asked to assist in the monastery’s infirmary, which soon became a demanding full-time role. With compassion and patience, he cared for his fellow monks while still pursuing his bookbinding work. The strain eventually affected his health, leading to repeated stays at Rottenmünster Hospital in Rottweil, where he found relief and comfort. He actually passed away just as he was about to begin another stay, with Father Severin by his side in his final moments.
After leaving the infirmary, Brother Eugen devoted himself to drawing, making greeting cards, and preparing holy water bottles for visitors. Though strict with himself in religious matters, he was kind-hearted and beloved by his community, family, and friends. His life was marked by faithfulness, devotion, and a deep commitment to prayer. May God reward him abundantly.
