Press release from the community of the Abbey of St. Michael the Archangel in Metten

Dear Sisters, dear Brothers,

On the feast of Saint Boniface, 5 June 2023, the Abbot President of the Bavarian Benedictine Congregation, Abbot Markus Eller OSB, in accordance with No. 38 of the Statutes of the Bavarian Benedictine Congregation, accepted the resignation of Abbot Wolfgang M. Hagl OSB from the office of Abbot of the Abbey of St. Michael the Archangel in Metten.

We express our heartfelt gratitude to Abbot Wolfgang for his service as the Abbot of our monastery, which he assumed on 9 September 1989, and we wish him God’s blessings and good health for his future path in life.

On 5 June 2023, under the presidency of the Abbot President of the Bavarian Benedictine Congregation, Father Athanasius Berggold OSB was elected as the 59th Abbot of the Abbey of St. Michael the Archangel in Metten. The elected candidate has been confirmed by the Abbot President.

We thank Abbot Athanasius for taking on this responsible office and we wish him God’s blessings in his service as the Abbot of our community.
