Fr. Wolfgang (Bruno) Mayrhofer OSB was born on 5 October 1949 in Artstetten, in the Diocese of St. Pölten. After completing his schooling in Artstetten and at Melk Abbey Grammar School, he entered Melk Abbey in 1967, taking the religious name Wolfgang. He made his temporary profession in 1968, his solemn profession in 1972, and was ordained a priest in 1975. He studied theology in Salzburg and forestry in Vienna. For many years, he served the abbey as Chapter Secretary, a member of the Economic Council, and Subprior, dedicating himself with remarkable loyalty to the life and administration of Melk Abbey.
Highly intelligent, knowledgeable, and unfailingly helpful, Fr. Wolfgang had a particular gift for practical work and administration. He introduced the abbey’s first computer and developed programs that served for decades as the foundation of its property and lease administration. Although ordained a priest, he felt especially drawn to the practical care of the monastery and its buildings. Yet beneath this practical exterior was a “hidden pastor,” as one confrere described him, who quietly supported people who might otherwise have been overlooked. He loved forestry and hunting, classical music, books and scores, and had a remarkable international stamp collection. His characteristic humour and his many stories of the past made him a memorable companion in the community.
Fr. Wolfgang remained deeply attached to Melk Abbey, which was the world in which he lived and wished to remain until the end. Even as his health deteriorated, he continued to live in his room in the cloister, with the assistance of carers, doctors, and staff, until shortly before his death. He bore his long illness without complaint and peacefully fell asleep in the early evening of 11 August 2026 at Melk Hospital, aged 76. We give thanks for his life, his faithful service, his practical wisdom, and his quiet care for others. His distinctive humour and the stories he loved to share will remain in the memories of his confreres and all who knew him. May he rest in the peace of Christ.
