Father Johannes Chrysostomus Ripplinger OSB returned peacefully to the loving hands of his Creator after a life dedicated to faith, service, and contemplation. Born as Karl-Heinz Ripplinger in 1945 in Güsten and raised in Merzig-Mondorf, he discovered early the call to deepen his spiritual life. His path led him from an apprenticeship in masonry to the Steyl Missionaries’ school, and eventually to Gerleve Abbey, where he professed vows in 1972 before pursuing studies in philosophy and theology in Salzburg.
Ordained to the priesthood in 1977, Father Johannes combined scholarly dedication with pastoral sensitivity. He completed a doctorate in theology in 1979 and served as spiritual director at Kolleg St. Benedikt. For two decades he guided the Office for Divine Worship and the Department of Liturgy in the Diocese of Münster, and in 2009 he was entrusted with the care of the liturgy in the extraordinary form of the Roman Rite. His profound devotion to the Eucharist, his Marian piety, and his commitment to liturgical beauty marked every stage of his ministry.
Though naturally reserved, Father Johannes was warm and companionable in the company of those he trusted. His life was shaped by quiet strength, fidelity to prayer, and a deep pastoral heart. As illness gradually weakened him, he accepted his suffering with serenity, sustained by the hope of Christ. May he now live in the fullness of Christ’s peace.
