Father Amand Kraml, Benedictine monk of Kremsmünster Abbey and Consistorial Councillor, passed away on 17 January 2026 in his 74th year. Born Gerhard Kraml in 1952 in Waldkirchen am Wesen, he entered the monastic community in 1971 and was ordained a priest in 1977. Following his theological studies in Salzburg and Rome, he served briefly as chaplain in Weißkirchen before dedicating himself to further academic work in biology, botany, and zoology. His scholarly curiosity, combined with a deep sense of vocation, shaped the direction of his lifelong service.

In 1987 Fr. Amand was appointed second curator of the natural science collections of the Abbey Observatory, and in 1995 became its director, a role he fulfilled with extraordinary dedication until his death. He was known for his meticulous documentation of the collections, his commitment to scientific accuracy, and his enthusiasm for sharing knowledge with visitors and students alike. His completion of a doctoral dissertation on the flora of Kremsmünster in 2002 was a milestone of personal pride. Recognized for his contributions to science and education, he was awarded the honorary title “Consultant for Science” by the Province of Upper Austria.

Beyond his academic and scientific achievements, Fr. Amand was a respected pastoral presence. For many years he assisted faithfully in the parishes of Steinerkirchen and Fischlham, where his thoughtful preaching and quiet dedication were warmly appreciated. Although reserved by nature, he was known for his precision, deep commitment, and unexpected sense of humor. Despite recurring heart problems in recent years, he continued his work with perseverance and devotion. May he now be welcomed into eternal peace, rewarded for his lifelong service to the community and to all who benefited from his gentle presence and steadfast faith.
