Fr. Gregor Buchberger, Benedictine monk of Kremsmünster Abbey, passed away on June 18, 2024, at the age of 55. Born in Perg in 1969, he completed his education in theology and religious pedagogy in Linz, with additional studies at the Catholic University of Eichstätt. After briefly joining the Trappist monastery in Engelszell and teaching in his hometown, he began his journey with the Benedictines in 2003, where he dedicated his life to service and spirituality. Known for his love of nature, he studied forestry with distinction and worked in Kremsmünster’s forest management, where he was respected for his dedication and hard work. Fr. Gregor also served as a prefect in the abbey’s school and was appreciated for his thoughtful, clear homilies, which touched many hearts.
He was a modest and private man, finding strength in his faith amid ongoing health challenges. Diagnosed with cancer in 2023, he faced his illness with acceptance. Supported by his family and community, he spent his final days with peace. Fr. Gregor’s funeral will be held at Kremsmünster Abbey Church on June 24, 2024.
