Br. Benedikt Ortner OSB, a beloved member of the Benedictine Abbey of Michaelbeuern, passed away on Ash Wednesday, February 14, 2024, at the age of 89. Born Herbert Ortner on March 7, 1934, in St. Johann im Pongau, he spent his childhood in Zell am See. After completing his apprenticeship as a gardener, he entered the monastery on March 15, 1954. He was given the name Benedikt and made his temporary profession in 1956, followed by his perpetual profession in 1959, and his solemn profession in 1970.
Br. Benedikt dedicated his life to serving the monastery, particularly in the garden, a task he continued even after an accident in 2017. He also pursued his passion for photography and beekeeping, contributing his skills to the community. For decades, he taught flute to local children and was an active member of the Michaelbeuern Folk Music Band. From 1981, he served as sacristan for over 30 years.
In his later years, Br. Benedikt remained involved in community life despite declining health, always valuing his connections with family, friends, and the monastery. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love of his community and the care of the nursing staff.
A Rosary for his soul will be held on Sunday, February 18, at 7:00 PM, in Stiftskirche Michaelbeuern. The Requiem Mass will be celebrated on Monday, February 19, at 1:30 PM, followed by his burial at the monastery cemetery. His life was marked by devotion, service, and love for his community.
