On 15 March 2026, at the Abbey of Our Lady of Montserrat in Spain, Dom Joan M. Recasens i Puig OSB returned to the Lord. Born in 1933, he entered the monastery in 1950 and made his monastic profession in 1953. Following his years of formation, he was ordained a priest in 1959. Throughout his long life of service, Father Joan embodied the Benedictine balance of stability and missionary availability, serving various communities before his pivotal appointment to Rome.

Here at Sant’Anselmo, he is remembered with particular affection as the rector of our church from 1985 until 2003. For nearly two decades, he was the face of the Aventine for the many pilgrims and locals who sought the sacraments in our church. Hundreds, or more likely thousands, of couples celebrated their wedding with him and still recall his kindness and sense of humour. His tenure transformed the basilica into a place of warm pastoral encounter within the academic and administrative heart of the Confederation.
Abbot Primate Jeremias Schröder OSB, reflecting on the impact of Fr. Joan’s ministry, noted the personal connection many at Sant’Anselmo felt toward him. “He was for many years the rector of our basilica here at Sant’Anselmo, and my boss when I was the student sacristan in the 1980s,” the Abbot Primate remarked. “Fr. Joan was a very kind man and beloved by the couples who got married in our church; one of the many monks of Montserrat who made a great contribution to our Roman house.”

Fr. Joan’s academic and professional contributions were equally significant. Between 1962 and 1971, he pursued specialised studies in archives at the Archive of the Crown of Aragon and earned a licentiate in Pastoral and Catechetics from the Lumen Vitae Institute in Brussels. This expertise served the Order well, both during his decade at the monastery of Saint Michel de Cuxa and later upon his return to Montserrat in 2003.

In the final chapters of his life at Montserrat, he continued to serve his community in various capacities, including terms as refectorian and subprior. He also maintained his dedication to the preservation of monastic history as the head of the monastery’s photographic archive, a role he held until his passing. His life remained a testament to the Benedictine ideal of work and prayer, carried out with a quiet, effective diligence.

The funeral, presided over by Father Abbot Manel Gasch OSB, was held on Tuesday 17 March at the Basilica of Santa Maria de Montserrat. As we commend our brother to the risen Christ, we remain grateful for the spirit of collaboration between Montserrat and Sant’Anselmo that his life so beautifully represented.
