The care of the sick must come before and above everything: one should serve them as if they were really Christ.
(RB 36,1) †
God, the Lord of life, on Wednesday, 23 August 2023, gave birth to our confrere
Frater Karlmann Tanzer OSB
Benedictine of Göttweig to the eternal home.
Karl Tanzer was born on 17 November 1954 in Steyr. He spent his childhood and elementary school years in the town of Haag and graduated from the monastery high school of Seitenstetten. In the course of his life he was involved in many professions and areas. Particularly noteworthy is the establishment of a private children’s group based on the Montessori pedagogy in Herzogenburg.
In his civil marriage with Sylvia he was given sons Laurenz and Severin. The first years of school he taught his sons in home schooling and accompanied them for many years in the soccer club 1. FC Union Stein as a loyal club member.
His first contact with the Benedictine Abbey of Göttweig was in 1995 during a retreat. On 8 September 2004, he was initiated as Frater Karlmann by Abbot Clemens Lashofer. In 2005 he took his temporary vows and on 8 September 2008 his solemn vows.
With great devotion he took care of the physical well-being of the community and the visitors of the guest house. Many a nightly conversation also served the spiritual well-being and will be remembered fondly. A special concern of his was the care for the sick confreres; he devoted all his attention to them as infirmary director.
He himself had been living with a cancer diagnosis since 2016.
We ask that you remember our deceased confrere in prayer and in the Eucharistic celebration.
We ask you to refrain from wreath and flower donations in favor of the Order of Göttweig. (Abbey of Göttweig IBAN AT08 1919 0000 0013 8776)
