Father Philipp Maucher died unexpectedly on 22 September 2026 at Herrsching Hospital after a severe heart attack. Born in Ebersbach, Allgäu, he studied in Kempten and Munich and worked as a journalist before entering St. Ottilien Archabbey in April 1981. He made his first profession in 1982 and his solemn profession in 1987.
After studies in philosophy and theology, Father Philipp was ordained priest in 1991. His missionary assignment at Peramiho Abbey, Tanzania, was shortened by serious illness, but he continued to serve energetically in administration, finance, pastoral ministry, and the publications of the Ottilien Congregation. He served as cellarer at Jakobsberg Priory, as procurator at St. Ottilien, and from 2015 to 2025 as chaplain at Haus St. Benedikt in Tutzing.
Father Philipp was gifted with many talents, a clear mind, resilience, and a strong sense of responsibility. Sociable yet able to live in solitude, he loved reading, especially theology, history, and the daily newspapers. Despite recurring health difficulties, he remained devoted to his work and to the Missionary Benedictine community. In accordance with his own wish, this obituary records only the essentials of his rich life. May he rest in peace.
