In 1981, Belmont Abbey (UK), of the English Benedictine Congregation, established a small monastic community in Piura, Peru, at the request of Monsignor Fernando Vargas.\u00a0 Just five years later, in 1986, Encarnaci\u00f3n Monastery opened its doors as a dependent priory of Belmont Abbey in the area of San Lorenzo (Tambogrande-Piura), under the direction of Dom Paul Stonham OSB, the community’s first prior.<\/p>\n

Searching for better property for both its agriculture and training centers, the community of Encarnaci\u00f3n Monastery accepted the invitation, in 2003, of the then-Bishop of Lur\u00edn, Monsignor Jos\u00e9 Ram\u00f3n Gurruchaga — a decision later to be confirmed in 2006 by his successor Monsignor Carlos Garc\u00eda — to establish an oasis of peace in the beautiful valley of Pachac\u00e1mac, on the slopes of Tomina Hill.\u00a0 For reference, there are two small monasteries of Benedictine monks in Peru, one in Chuchito-Puno, with a small house in Na\u00f1a-Lima, and the other in Pachac\u00e1mac-Lima.\u00a0 Benedictine sisters also are present in Piura, specifically in Sechura and Morrop\u00f3n.<\/p>\n

The most recent development involves the Pachac\u00e1mac monastic community’s recent move to the property of the Monastery of Santa Mar\u00eda de la Sant\u00edsima Trinidad in Lur\u00edn (in the surrounding area of Lima), Peru.\u00a0 The\u00a0Cistercian community that was previously at this property had been established on the site in 1992, as a foundation of the Abbey of Las Huelgas, Spain, of the Cistercian Congregation of San Bernardo.\u00a0 When these Cistercians were called back to Spain, they invited the Benedictine monks of Pachac\u00e1mac to settle on the property, so as to strengthen their monastic presence even further within the Diocese of Lur\u00edn.<\/p>\n<\/div>

The Benedictine monastic community of Pachac\u00e1mac has moved to the property of a formerly Cistercian monastery in Lur\u00edn, Peru.\u00a0 The\u00a0Cistercian community previously living there, having to return to Spain, invited the Benedictines to continue their monastic presence on the site.
