Fr. Paulus (Gerhard) Bergauer OSB was called home to the Lord on 7 September 2026, at the age of 89. Born in Vienna in 1936, he entered Schottenstift in 1956, received the religious name Paulus, and was ordained a priest in 1962. In 1963 he earned his doctorate in theology with a dissertation on the Letter of James. His lifelong interest in the natural sciences led him also to study biology and to design the root-grass wastewater treatment system at Schottenhof.<\/span><\/p>\n Fr. Paulus devoted his life to teaching, pastoral ministry, and the service of Schottenstift. From 1975, he served for more than four decades as parish priest of St. Ulrich, while also teaching religion and biology at the Schottengymnasium. From 1982 to 2012, he was bursar of the monastery. His distinctive personality, his practical wisdom, enthusiasm for technology, and his bicycle journeys between monastery and parish made him a much-loved and unforgettable figure to generations of parishioners and students.<\/p>\n In his final years, Fr. Paulus lived in Vienna-Mauer, in the house where he had spent weekends as a child. With time, he learned to accept the limitations of old age and passed away peacefully, grateful and reconciled with the people and events of his life. We remember him with gratitude for his faithful service, his strong convictions, his curiosity, and his dedication to others.
