Father Thomas (Louis) Romieu entered the Lord\u2019s eternal peace on the evening of June 6, 2026, during the Vigil of the Blessed Sacrament. Born in Casablanca, Morocco, in 1931, he was 95 years old. He made his monastic profession at En Calcat Abbey in 1953 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1959. As the eldest of eleven children, his early years in Morocco, Germany, and France shaped the breadth of vision and humanity that would characterize his entire life.<\/p>\n
After classical studies in Toulouse and theological formation at Sant\u2019Anselmo in Rome, Father Thomas dedicated his considerable intellectual gifts to the service of the Church and the monastic community. A gifted teacher, lover of Sacred Scripture, and scholar of ancient languages, he helped form generations of novices. Over seventy-five years of monastic life, he faithfully fulfilled many responsibilities, including novice master, guestmaster, cook, prior, and member of the Abbey Council, where he served continuously for four decades with wisdom, prudence, and devotion.<\/p>\n
Father Thomas was deeply respected as a confessor, particularly among the sisters of Dourgne, who valued his attentive listening, discretion, and kindness. A man of exceptional culture and learning, he remained throughout his life an avid reader, a thoughtful observer of the world, and a living memory of the community. Beneath a reserved appearance were a generous heart, unwavering fidelity, and quiet humility. His example of faith, simplicity, obedience, and service leaves a lasting legacy.
