Father Donald Francis Talafous, OSB, was born in 1926, in Duluth, Minnesota. The eldest of four, he developed a love for literature during his school years and worked summer jobs to support himself. A fateful meeting with a Benedictine priest led him to Saint John\u2019s University, where he began his undergraduate studies and later entered monastic life, taking the name Camillus before returning to Don. He earned a B.A. in philosophy in 1948, was ordained in 1952, and began a lifetime of service through teaching and ministry.<\/p>\n
Father Don\u2019s early assignments took him from Latin instruction to missionary work in the Bahamas and pastoral service in New York. Returning to Saint John\u2019s, he became university chaplain and professor of theology, eventually earning a Ph.D. from the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley. Known for his pastoral care and personal connection with students, his \u201cChaplain\u2019s Letter\u201d became a beloved fixture on campus. Teaching for 37 years and serving as chaplain for 16, he deeply influenced countless students and alumni.<\/p>\n
A prolific writer and devoted monk, Father Don authored several theological books and remained active into his 90s, even through online reflections. Honored with multiple awards, he also served as alumni chaplain, maintaining strong personal ties and an astounding memory for names. He passed away on April 11, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of faith, kindness, and intellectual pursuit. May God reward him abundantly.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>
