The Abbey of St. Paul in Lavanttal mourns the passing of our beloved brother, Abbot Bruno (Johann Nepomuk) Rader, OSB, who was called to his eternal home on February 12, 2024. Born on May 7, 1939, Johann lost his mother at birth and was raised by foster parents. He entered St. Paul’s Abbey high school in 1950 and became a member of the Benedictine order in 1958, taking the name Bruno. He was ordained a priest in 1964 and began a dedicated career teaching religion, mentoring students, and leading youth programs.
In 1979, following Abbot Paulus Schneider’s death, Fr. Bruno was elected the 56th Abbot of St. Paul, serving until 1993. His tenure saw the 175th anniversary of the abbey’s restoration and the grand “Treasury of Carinthia” exhibition celebrating the abbey’s 900th year. Known for his wisdom, kindness, and eloquence, he continued to teach and inspire students throughout his abbacy.
After his abbatial role, Abbot Bruno served in pastoral care for a decade, then returned to the abbey, where he remained a quiet, prayerful presence for his brothers and community. His motto, “O Bonitas” (“O goodness”), reflected his dedication to living and sharing God’s goodness.
A Requiem Mass will be held on February 21 at 10:00 a.m. in the Abbey Church of St. Paul, followed by burial in the local monastery cemetery.
