On Thursday morning, 13 December 13, 2018, P\u00e8re Gilbert Combes OSB went to meet his Lord.\u00a0 He was 94 years old, born in Millau (Aveyron), France on 30 October 1924, professing monastic vows at En\u00a0Calcat\u00a0on 8 September 1945 and being ordained a priest on 19 May 1951.<\/p>\n

P\u00e8re Gilbert was one of the last \u00abmissionary monks\u00bb of the En Calcat community.\u00a0He entered En\u00a0Calcat\u00a0at the age of 20 and was sent to\u00a0Toumliline\u00a0(Morocco)\u00a0eight years later at the\u00a0time of its founding in 1952. He remained there until its closing in 1968, known as a passionate teacher who was very\u00a0attached to the young Moroccans of\u00a0Azrou\u00a0and the region to which he opened worlds of knowledge.\u00a0 Many of them in return have shared with him an indelible friendship, recognizing the deep personal impact he made on their lives.\u00a0After the closure of Toumliline,\u00a0P\u00e8re Gilbert remained as a teacher in Morocco and went to the monastery\u00a0of Koubri, in Burkina Faso, where he gave 40 of the best years of his life, founding 30 schools in the\u00a0surrounding\u00a0villages. For a long time, he was known as a creator of the local community.<\/p>\n

In June 2014, at almost 90 years old, he came to En\u00a0Calcat\u00a0with Prior Jean\u00a0Christophe, allowing himself to be persuaded \u2013 but not without hesitation and scruples \u2013 to remain at En Calcat for reasons of health.\u00a0 He had left his\u00a0heart in\u00a0Koubri, but he remained fraternal and courageous and present to the community as encountered 60 years later.<\/p>\n

The funeral mass for P\u00e8re Gilbert Combes OSB was celebrated on Saturday, 15 December at 14.30, at the Abbaye Saint Beno\u00eet d\u2019En Calcat.\u00a0We recommend him to the prayers of the Benedictine Confederation.<\/p>\n<\/div>
