Father Leonhard (Felix) Kessler OSB, a devoted monk of Engelberg Abbey, returned peacefully to God on January 9, 2026, after a brief illness. Born in Zurich in 1934, he grew up in a lively household with five younger siblings, forming the foundations of his warm and patient character. His studies in Disentis and later his military service in Basel prepared him for the call to monastic life, which he embraced in 1955. After professing vows in 1956, he continued his formation in Rome, receiving a licentiate in theology and cultivating a deep love for Gregorian chant before his ordination in 1960.<\/span><\/p>\n Upon returning to Engelberg, Father Leonhard dedicated himself wholeheartedly to teaching at the abbey school, where his gifts as an educator blossomed. Although originally drawn to missionary work in Cameroon, he discerned his true vocation in forming young minds through German, Latin, mathematics, and religion. His academic journey led him to further studies in physics and mathematics, culminating in a distinguished 45-year teaching career. Alongside his intellectual pursuits, he served faithfully as organist and choir director, remaining a pillar of the abbey\u2019s choral prayer through his steady presence, musical skill, and gentle humor.<\/span><\/p>\n In his later years, Father Leonhard continued to offer support wherever needed\u2014substituting for colleagues, giving tutoring, and assisting confreres with technical or computer challenges. Even after surviving a heart attack in 2015, he embraced each day with gratitude, often remarking that excitement was now \u201cfor others to handle.\u201d His calm spirit, practical wisdom, and unfailing willingness to help made him a cherished companion in community life.
